6:48 am on 10 September 2008

The New Zealand Ministry of Education is helping Samoa's Education Department to translate and produce story books for children to foster a love of reading.

The project, which is part of the Treaty of Friendship initiatives between the New Zealand and Samoan governments, aims to strengthen literacy in the Samoan language both in S?moa and the Samoan communities in New Zealand.

Forty picture story books have already been produced including several written by local writer, Emma Kruse Va'ai.

The books are distributed to primary schools in Samoa with teacher manual booklets.

Teachers at government schools have received training on how to effectively use the books to promote learning.
