7:11 am on 13 September 2008

Allegations that Samoa's Police Commissioner, Papalii Lorenese Neru, was

involved in the alleged illegal import of guns from American Samoa on-board

the police patrol boat, the MV Nafanua, are to be investigated by a Commission of Inquiry.

The decision to hold a further inquiry was announced last night after the outcome of an investigation two months ago led by the Attorney General, Aumua Ming Leung Wai, was considered at a cabinet meeting this week.

The government has also ordered the police Criminal Investigation Department to investigate the captain and crew of the patrol boat.

And the CEO of the Ministry of Revenue has been asked to conduct an inquiry

into the Customs officer who was on duty when the MV Nafanua arrived in

port from American Samoa.
