The Commonwealth Foreign Ministers will meet to discuss further steps against Fiji in New York later this month.

New Zealand's trade minister, Phil Goff, is attending the meeting as a representative of Helen Clark, who is now the acting Foreign Minister after Winston Peters stepped down amid an investigation into his financial affairs.

Mr Goff says the he'll be calling for the Commonwealth and the United Nations to be supporting the Pacfic Islands Forum's stance.

"I think that we would like to see the Pacific Islands Forum, the Commonwealth and the United Nations working arm in arm to bring whatever pressure and encouragement can be brought on the Fiji interim government to restore to the people of that country, their normal democratic rights."
