New Caledonia developing more sustainable energy options

2:12 pm on 16 September 2008

New Caledonia's Government has announced a new set of targets to try and cut the territory's dependence on imported fuel and increase the production of renewable energy sources.

As part of the plan, it is envisaged that appropriate investments should be made over the next eight years to expand hydroelectricity, solar and wind power production.

Several wind farm projects have been implemented in the past few years in New Caledonia.

One of these is located in the north of the main island, with 22 windmills already erected.
