Police in Samoa have arrested three young men in connection with forest
fires that have burnt over 2,000 acres of farmland and forest at Aapo and
Asau on Savaii island.
Formal charges have yet to be laid although police say that more people could be held for questioning.
The Talamua on line news service reports that police detained the trio last night after the emergency status was lifted and the area declared safe with all the fires put out by fire fighters and helpers.
The fires had been burning for a week and came close to threatening residential settlements at Asau in the weekend.
Two days of rain have helped put out the flames.
