The people in Kiribati are being encouraged to return to planting their own food products instead of relying on imports.

Kiribati imports around 90 percent of its food which include rice, flour and sugar.

However, the director of Agriculture and Livestock Kinae Kairo says increasing the local food production is a good idea but they must also be careful.

"We don't encourage the use of fertilisers or other chemicals because the vulnerability and the fragility of our islands. The underground water is our only source of water and we really treasure that."
