Fiji's interim PM makes suggestions to Forum Chair

Fiji's interim Prime Minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, has written to the Pacific Islands Forum chair and Niue Premier Toke Talagi setting out proposals for the way forward.

The permanent secretary in the Prime Minister's Office, Parmesh Chand, said they were still waiting on a response from Mr Talagi after writing last week.

Papua New Guinea High Commissioner to Fiji Peter Eafeare said his Prime Minister, Sir Michael Somare, was keen to see Fiji re-engage with the Fiji/Forum Joint Working Group.

He told the Fiji Times that Sir Michael would also like to see the interim Fiji Government accept the request for a visit by the Forum Ministerial Contact Group later this year, when it is formally put to them.

Mr Eafeare said his country's interest in the current situation had not dwindled but had been heightened by its desire to engage with Fiji to assist with an election next year.
