Good turnout in Solomon Islands two by-elections

3:20 pm on 23 September 2008

Turnout appears to be high in East Honiara and Lau-Baelelea in Malaita as the country holds a by-election.

A total of 43 independent candidates are standing for the two constituencies in a bid to become members of parliament.

East Honiara is going to the polls, because its former MP, Charles Dausabea, has been jailed for fraud, while the Lau-Baelelea Constituency is holding a by election following the death of its MP, Samuel Ragosomani.

There are 30 000 registered voters in East Honiara and 12 000 in Lau-Baelelea.

Voting continues until this afternoon.

Counting will start tonight, and results are expected to come through at about midday tomorrow.
