Fiji publisher to be subsumed into new university press

A publication house for mostly Pacific Island authors in the region is about to close and be subsumed into a new university press.

IPS publications has been independently managed at the Suva campus of the University of the South Pacific since 1976.

The Institute of Pacific Studies, or IPS, has published hundreds of titles from poetry to politics, but a new entity the USP Press will be set up in its place.

The outgoing IPS Publications editor Wendy Tubman says it's sad.

"It's the end of a good era. We have left behind a vast wealth of information. It's probably the greatest concentration of works about the Pacific anywhere. It's actually being closed down as an independent identity so the books are being transferred over to the bookshop and everything will now revert to the university."
