Police in New Caledonia have arrested 12 people from the Middle East suspected of being illegal immigrants.

The arrest was made as part of a larger human trafficking scheme and it includes eleven Iraqis and one Palestinian.

They were caught in possession of allegedly forged Danish and stolen Irish passports.

They are facing charges of possession and use of forged travel documents, as well as illegal entry.

Investigations are continuing, and local authorities are liasing with French police, as well as international organisations, to double check whether the group could have had any connection with terrorist organisations.
