Fiji Commerce Commission runs out of money, closes down

Fiji's Commerce Commission says every effort should have been made to keep the organisation operating.

The commerce commission has closed down its operations due to a lack of government funds.

The interim minister of commerce, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says he is in talks over the office's closure today.

Retail Association President Himmat Lodhia said that the Commerce Commission serves an important purpose for the benefit of consumers.

He says if funding is a problem to run an independent office, they should have integrated their activities or work in with other commerce organisations like the Fair Trading Board.

He says that would have ensured the public is served continously by this important organisation.
