Driver training for Samoa's switch to the other side of the road put off

3:00 pm on 2 October 2008

Plans this week for drivers in Samoa to improve their skills in preparation for major changes to road rules have been stalled.

Training was supposed to have started this week for people to learn how to drive on the left side of the road, in preparation for the formal switch in September 2009.

The Transport Control Board has already changed all road markings at the sports complex at Tuana'imoto, ready for the driver training.

But our correspondent in Apia Autagavaia Tipi Autagavaia says after much publicity and preparation, the training has been indefinitely postponed.

"The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure has cancelled the training because some of the equipment needed for the training hasn't arrived in the country. They did not say what sort of equipment."
