Police in Samoa drop legal action against Digicel

4:42 pm on 2 October 2008

The Samoa Attorney General, Aumua Ming Leung Wai, has withdrawn two criminal charges against the mobile phone company Digicel.

The company had been charged after police investigated complaints from

members of the public over a promotion run by Digicel.

The case was set for a one day hearing this week with the prosecution preparing to call the Police Commissioner, the Attorney General, and the Regulator to give evidence of an alleged breach of the Gaming Act.

There has been no explanation from the state as to why it is now dropping the case, but it is known the Regulator is ill and out of the country.
