Noumea liquor stores exempted from ban on sales this weekend

Liquor stores in New Caledonia will be exempted from this weekend's ban on alcohol sales in the capital, Noumea.

The ban was brought in last weekend as a trial to see if it curbed crime in the city and has been deemed successful.

Last week all retailers were stopped from selling alcohol from Friday evening until Sunday at midnight.

But on this occasion only supermarkets will be stopped from selling alcohol after the specialist stores argued that the youths involved in crimes don't buy from them because their stock is more expensive.
