Niue Premier expects less interference from New Zealand officials following Wellington talks

The Premier of Niue, Toke Talagi, says he expects an improvement in performance from New Zealand aid officials dealing with the island.

Niue is heavily aid dependent and almost all that support comes from New Zealand, but Mr Talagi says he wants a speedier, more efficient process through which this support is delivered.

Earlier this week he held talks with Government ministers, including Prime Minister Helen Clark, and Trade Minister Phil Goff.

Mr Talagi says they have reached agreement that officials will not hinder the political will.

"I expect an improvement in performance, less interference on their part - these are subtle things that are happening. And allow us to run Niue in a way that we can run Niue. You can't run Niue from Wellington. We can run it better from Niue."

Mr Goff said earlier there had been a meeting of minds on streamlining the process, giving Niue more responsibility.
