Samoa's state owned power company introduces pre-pay meters

2:19 pm on 10 October 2008

Samoa's Electric Power Corporation, or the EPC, has begun installing pre-pay meters for businesses and households.

It is a system the Corporation says will save energy and help the community avoid sometimes enormous electricity debts.

The EPC says the priority is being given to more than 500 consumers who had already applied for access to cash power in Apia.

Later the focus will be on villages around the two main islands with the aim to cover 75 percent of the country in four years.

The prepayment meters are part of the Government's Power Sector Expansion project, with funding from the Asian Development Bank and the Japanese and Australian aid agencies.
