PNG keen to host SPC office

5:17 pm on 14 October 2008

The Papua New Guinea Government is committed to the opening of an office for the Secretariat of the Pacific Community in Port Moresby.

The Pacnews agency says the PNG High Commissioner to Fiji, Peter Eafeare, told a meeting of SPC representatives the proposed office will better address the needs of PNG and other countries and territories in the western Pacific.

According to Mr Eafeare, PNG has the potential and capacity to work with SPC in the delivery of the organisation's services, particularly in the agriculture sector.

He says PNG institutions such as the National Agriculture Research Institute and the National Quarantine Authority can complement and collaborate with SPC services.
