Caledonia Together Party officially launched

5:13 pm on 14 October 2008

The president of New Caledonia's Southern Province has this weekend named his new political movement the Caledonia Together Party.

This comes as Philippe Gomes and 11 Congress members finalised a split from the anti-independence Future Together Party following rifts since the 2007 election.

Our Noumea correspondent, Claudine Wery, says the new party wants to tackle the territory's social inequities.

"This new party is against the alliance between the president of Future Together and the president of the government with the right wing party, Rassemblement-UMP, which is the party of the French president, Nicolas Sarkozy. They say that Rassemblement doesn't respect the Noumea accord, and has a political agenda of provocation towards the independentists. They say that Rassemblement is against social process and addressing social inequalities in New Caledonia."
