Wallisian delegation abuses French administrator

8:31 am on 16 October 2008

A group of six Wallisians, including four traditional chiefs, have forced their way into the office of the French prefect and abused him.

The incident has been reported by local television which says the group represented reformists among the rival clans keen to have a meeting with Philippe Paolantoni.

Reports say the group abused him for about an hour, calling him useless and labeling him a coloniser.

Police were called but didn't intervene.

The group, which also included a senior leader of the island's congress, accused Mr Paolantoni of not receiving them although he had arrived in the territory more than a month ago.
