Forum head welcomes resumption of dialogue with Fiji interim regime

4:24 pm on 17 October 2008

The new secretary-general of the Pacific Islands Forum, Tuiloma Neroni Slade, has hailed as positive and timely the Fiji interim administration's announcement to rejoin the ministerial group looking into the Fiji situation.

In June, the interim government suspended the talks with the Forum Joint Working Group because of what it described as a lack of support by Australia and New Zealand.

Mr Slade has also confirmed that preparations for the scheduled special Forum leaders' meeting in Papua New Guinea to review Fiji's situation were on-track.

He says meetings are now being scheduled.

"It is in line with the conclusion of the Forum leaders and their desire as expressed in the Niue communique that this re-engagement should resume. We are now in the secretariat working closely with the authorities of the interim government to try to determine dates and the timing of these meetings."
