PNG's education department needs right teachers to deliver HIV/AIDS message

The Papua New Guinea Education Department says the right teachers must be upskilled to teach students about the risks of contracting HIV/AIDS.

The Department, in partnership with the United Nations body, UNAIDS, is conducting two-week long life skills workshops around the country.

Deputy secretary of education standards, Damien Rapese, says it is important teachers are equipped with the sufficient skills to deliver the HIV/AIDS message, but they must be chosen wisely.

"While we equip the teachers with the skills, we know there can be problems because of the way they teach children. We've encountered problems before. But teachers who teach about sex education, we must make sure they are the right people to do that."

Damien Rapese says he is confident there will be a reduction in the spread of the virus, once the life skills programme is imparted onto students.
