Fiji women's organisations not invited to important political meeting

Civil society and women's organisations in Fiji are angry they were ignored by the interim prime minister and not invited to today's political meeting.

Representatives of the political parties registered with the Elections Office are to decide with interim administrators, terms of reference for a broader political forum, later on in the year.

But the interim prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, said those attending the meeting should not come with a list of demands.

The Pacific Concerns Resource Centre director, Tupou Vere, who was not invited to the meeting, said the process was dictatorial to some degree.

"This is not a process in our mind that is a level-playing field for everyone. All the actions to date of the interim regime is one that they come with what they propose to do and you work within that framework."

The British and Australian High Commissions have stated they are following developments closely.
