Fiji Times newspaper to seek clarification from court on claims by interim AG

The Fiji Times will seek clarification from the court on claims by the interim Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum that the High Court granted an order for the newspaper to disclose details of the author of a letter published in the letters to the editor.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum, in a statement, said the High Court in Suva granted leave for an order of committal against the newspaper, its publisher Rex Gardner and editor-in-chief Netani Rika.

Richard Naidu of Munro Leys said he would need to seek clarification on accuracy of the statement.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said he was not prepared to see the judiciary maligned in the media.

He said this sort of contempt that is being shown to the courts by certain people in this country with political agendas will not be allowed to go unchallenged.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum added that fair comment and constructive criticism was one thing but the Fiji Times publication had gone beyond that.
