Voting begins in American Samoa

11:30 am on 29 October 2008

Voting in American Samoa has begun for those who won't or cannot cast their ballots on Election Day next Tuesday.

The number of absentee voters is close to 700.

They include all those who will be conducting the elections, those who cannot vote on Election Day because of religious reasons, and those confined to an institution and the infirm.

This last category includes patients at the hospital and inmates of the Tafuna Correctional facility.

At total of 305 pollworkers and Election Office staff will be working on Election Day.

American Samoans will elect a governor and a lt. governor, a delegate to the US Congress in Washington and members of the American Samoa House of Representatives.
