Fiji politician expects election in 2011

The general secretary of the Fiji People's Party, Charan Jeath Singh, says he believes the interim government will be in power for five years.

Mr Singh, who was among those attending Monday's political leaders dialogue meeting in Suva, has told Fijilive that he is sure that the elections will not be held sooner than 2011.

The interim regime has pushed aside its earlier commitment to hold elections by March, with the new elections supervisor suggesting polls won't be able to be held for another year at least.

Mr Singh says participants at this week's meeting were unanimous that Fiji must return to parliamentary rule.

However, their positions varied on issues such as electoral reform and timeline for a general election.
