Tongans warned of economic slump

Tongans have been warned to prepare for the impact of the world economic crisis.

The Princess Regent, Princess Pilolevu Tuita, closed the 2008 session of Parliament on Thursday, saying the devastating impact of the crisis had not yet reached Tonga but the country should prepare for it.

The Matangi Tonga website quotes the Princess as calling on the people to be thrifty with resources, to re-organise their lives and tighten controls on spending.

The Princess also appealed for the support and the prayers of the people to help the Commission for Political Reform to achieve its mandate and to secure the sovereignty of Tonga forever.
