The French Polynesian president, Gaston Tong Sang, has outlined the 2009 budget, warning that the territory will have to do better with fewer means.
Addressing the assembly, Mr Tong Sang says next year will be a year of austerity as a result of a crisis brought about by the global financial problems and the political instability in French Polynesia.
He says his provisions are realistic as major public work projects are about to be complete.
The opposition has dismissed his outline as an empty budget.
This comes amid concern over French reforms which will see less money being disbursed in the territory.
The reforms concern cuts in the retirement provisions and a reduction in the military presence.
