Tongan judge favours tougher sentence for indecent asasault

Tonga's Chief Justice says Parliament needs to consider tougher penalties for indecent assault.

Matangi Tonga reports that Chief Justice Anthony Ford was commenting during the sentencing of a 48 year old man for the indecent assault of an eleven year old girl.

The man, Sione Naitoko, was jailed for five years after pleading guilty.

Mr Ford says it is evident from this case and others that indecent assault of young girls can be devastating, and the current maximum jail term of seven years could be looked at.

He says this type of crime is increasing in Tonga and young children need to be protected from sex predators like Naitoko.
