Papua New Guinea's National Executive Council has appointed Sir Salamo Injia as the country's new Chief Justice.

Justice Sir Salamo, from Enga Province, has been the deputy chief justice since 2003.

The Post Courier quotes Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare saying the ten-year appointment is a recognition of Sir Salamo's contribution towards the judicial system.

Sir Michael also acknowledged the services of outgoing Chief Justice Sir Mari Kapi who has been forced into an early retirement due to ill health.
