Absentee voting in American Samoa run-off election underway

9:25 am on 14 November 2008

American Samoa's Election Office has begun local absentee voting for the gubernatorial run off election on November 18 between the top two vote getters in the November 4 general elections.

The two teams are incumbents Governor Togiola Tulafono and Lt. Governor Faoa Ipulasi Sunia and challengers Utu Abe Malae and Nua Mailo Saoluaga.

Those eligible to cast absentee ballots are registered voters who are traveling off island and wont be returning until after the election, Election Office staff who will be conducting the run off contest, and those detained at the Tafuna Correctional Facility awaiting sentencing.

There were 700 local absentee ballots cast in the general elections but that number should drop for the run off because there wont be as many Election Office workers as November 4 since there's only one race.
