Two face court over smokers' riot in Noumea

Two people in New Caledonia will face the courts following last week's smokers' riot in Noumea.

A crowd of smokers tried to storm the Tobacco Administration building as they were frustrated at a shortage of cigarettes in the shops.

The Noumea daily says two people had been arrested for tossing a teargas grenade back at the riot police when the security forces tried to disperse the crowd.

They will appear in court in March.

Tobacco supplies have been normalised.
