French High Commissioner in Tahiti in trouble over "vet"call

11:37 am on 17 November 2008

The French Polynesian Human Rights League says it will lodge a complaint over an attack on the personal dignity of an employee of the French high commission.

The Depeche de Tahiti newspaper says this relates to an incident last month when the employee complained about backpain and asked to see a doctor.

The high commissioner, Adolphe Colrat, told the man that he would be better off going to see a veterinarian.

Mr Colrat says the remark was meant to be ironic.

The Human Rights League says this is not the first complaint about alleged racism expressed by Mr Colrat.
