Doctors set to strike from tonight in French Polynesia

3:10 pm on 17 November 2008

Hospital doctors in French Polynesia are set to go on strike at midnight tonight after a last minute agreement fell over.

The health minister appeared to have sealed a deal to avoid a stoppage but the unions questioned the agreement because they feared that the public sector minister could delay its application.

Despite the strike, care in emergencies will be assured.

Meanwhile, a strike at Papeete's Sheraton Hotel is continuing over the dismissal of 18 staff members.

This comes as public sector workers have paralysed institutions, including many schools, in protest at the French pension reform.
