International animal diseases not an issue in Pacific region

11:41 am on 18 November 2008

A veterinarian in Samoa says an international livestock conference will help Pacific experts cope if foreign diseases are brought in by livestock.

But Dr Sina Moala, a councillor of the Commonwealth Veterinary Association says infection of pigs, cattle and sheep in the island countries is not too likely given it's rare for livestock to be imported.

But she says they need to know about the diseases and remedies, just in case.

As well as biosecurity the conference in Apia will consider such issues as animal welfare and livestock production.

Around 100 delegates are attending the four day event, which starts today.
