The Kiribati government has approved Digicel's proposal to invest 9.3 million US dollars to roll out its mobile phone network in Kiribati.

Pacific Magazine reports that Digicel will spend 85 percent of the investment within the first six month after the licence is granted.

Digicel plans to set up a network for urban and rural Tarawa, Christmas Island and six other islands with a population of at least 3,000.

Later on the investment would continue to cover other islands with a population of over 1,000 within 24 months of the licence being issued.

The agreement with Kiribati brings to six the number of countries in the Pacific in which Digicel is now operating.
