UN sends official to Fiji

6:02 pm on 21 November 2008

The United Nations is sending what it calls an exploratory mission to Fiji next week.

In a statement, the Secretary General says he has conveyed to the interim Fiji government that a mutually agreeable way forward on the political situation can be found following the 2006 military coup.

The mission is being headed by Tamrat Samuel from the UN's Department of Political Affairs in New York.

While in Suva, the mission will meet a broad range of national stakeholders, as well as regional and international actors, especially the Pacific Islands Forum and the Commonwealth.
