PNG men need re-education, says country's woman MP

Papua New Guinea's only woman MP, Dame Carol Kidu, says her country needs to re-educate its men.

A new AusAid report says almost 70 percent of women in PNG are being beaten by their husbands and more than half have been forced into having sex, with half of the victims seeking treatment under the age of 16.

And 60 percent of the men interviewed reported to having taken part in gang rapes.

Dame Carol Kidu says the report is alarming.

"There are areas that we need to enforce legal support systems for victims, legal aid, and of course continuing community sensitisation at the family and community level as well. I wouldn't want to say that this is prescriptively what government will be doing."

Dame Carol Kidu however says while she accepts the report, she believes there needs to be more specific data.
