PNG's sole woman MP defies government on education bill

2:52 pm on 27 November 2008

Papua New Guinea's only female parliament member, Community Development Minister Dame Carol Kidu, has broken government ranks by refusing to vote on a proposed education bill.

Dame Carol briefly left parliament on Wednesday before returning to criticise her government's haste and lack of consultation for the proposal.

The bill aims to create 13 pilot community colleges in four PNG regions and was easily passed despite the Minister's protest.

She says it is a major initiative and should have been deliberated on more thoroughly.

Dame Carol says it will have huge financial implications and will not solve the massive problems faced in education.

Before the close of the last sitting day until next March, PNG's three-billion US dollar budget was unanimously passed.
