4:56 pm on 28 November 2008

A bench warrant has been ordered for the arrest of a Fiji soldier who failed to attend court to answer a murder charge.

The Fiji Times reports that Corporal Maika Vuniwawa case was to be heard at the High Court in Suva.

State lawyer Rosemary Drau sought a bench warrant for Mr Vuniwawa arrest when he did not show up.

The victim, Nimilote Verebasaga, died at the Queen Elizabeth Barracks hospital in January 2007 in the custody of soldiers.

It was reported that the army maintained Mr Verebasaga developed breathing problems on the way to the army headquarters at Nabua and lost consciousness while being transported to the barrack's hospital.

He was one of three civilians to die in the custody of the security forces soon after the military regime took control of the country nearly two years ago.

The case has been adjourned until January the 16th.
