RAMSI praises Solomons' move to cut domestic violence

8:08 pm on 1 December 2008

The Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands has congratulated the country on its commitment to end the high rates of domestic violence.

RAMSI's Special Coordinator, Tim George, says violence against women and children is never acceptable and it is very significant this is now being openly confronted.

He says it is an issue that affects everyone and needs to be tackled at all levels of society from the Government through to the churches, grassroots community groups and individuals associated with the years of tensions.

Mr George says men must recognise the crucial role they need to play both in their homes and in the broader community, in combating the high rates of domestic violence.
