Police in Samoa to use breathalyzers during holiday season

1:36 pm on 2 December 2008

The police in Samoa are set to start using breathalyzer devices for monitoring drunk drivers ahead of the Christmas and New Year's holidays.

12 traffic officers participate in training on how to use the new devices which were donated by the Accident Compensation Corporation early this year.

The assistant police commissioner, Papalii Li'o, says there has also been an amendment to the Road Traffic Ordinance to allow for criminal charges to be laid against a drunk driver.

The breathalyzers will be used at police road blocks day and night in Apia and Salelologa townships.
