Samoa PM explains drive switch challenges

5:20 pm on 3 December 2008

Samoa's Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi says some people are opposed to the change to right-hand driving because such vehicles are the ugliest in the world.

The Samoa Observer reports Tuilaepa as saying the bill to switch Samoans to driving on the other side of the road is the most difficult legislation he has had to push through Parliament.

Tuilaepa says the main motivation for the change is to allow Samoans living in rural areas and those farming to get vehicles from their relatives in New Zealand and Australia.

As the law progressed through parliament, thousands were involved in demonstrations against the road switch which were the biggest rallies of dissent the country had seen in years.
