Papuans rally outside Indonesian police station

2:37 pm on 5 December 2008

About 50 Papuan human rights activists in Indonesia have staged a rally outside Papua Provincial Police headquarters, demanding the release of pro-independence leader Buchtar Tabuni.

The Jakarta Post reports that police arrested Mr Tabuni for organising a rally in October, demanding Papua's independence.

Papua Police Chief, Commander Paulus Waterpauw, says the detainee has been charged with sedition, agitating the crowd and resisting officers.

However, an organiser of this week's rally outside the police headquarters, Victor Yeimo, said the protesters were also demanding independence and challenged the police to arrest them as well.
