Regional Foreign Ministers to meet again in Fiji from Wednesday to push for early elections

Pacific Foreign Ministers will try again this week to convince the Fiji interim regime to restore democracy.

The Ministerial Contact Group, which includes the Foreign Ministers of Papua New Guinea, Tuvalu, New Zealand, Tonga, Samoa, and Australia, will meet later this week in Fiji.

It leads the Pacific Forum's drive to have the interim Government hold elections by March next year - something to which Fiji is emphatically opposed.

The New Zealand Foreign Minister, Murray McCully, says a way must be found to get Fiji moving in the right direction, but he wants to use the meeting to become more acquainted with the issues.

"I've got some sense of where things are moving but I am going to be, as a newcomer to the scene, keen to hear how those who have been grappling with this process, over now, two years, see the issue playing out and hoping that we can contribute towards some improvement in the process."
