Australian miner awaits PNG disaster details before commenting

The mining company whose camp was swept away in last week's landslide in the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea, says it is waiting on a number of investigations before commenting about the causes of the tragedy.

Ten people, including five staff of Perth-based Barrick Gold, were killed by the landslide.

The Post Courier newspaper quotes local MP Sai Sailon Beseo as describing the camp, at the base of a gully, as a death trap.

The company had reportedly been drilling exploratory holes just above the camp.

But Barrick spokesperson, Selena Watt, says they have attributed the slip to extreme rainfall, and beyond that will not comment until several separate investigations are completed.

"We are really waiting for those results before we make any determination you know, as to the location of camps etc, so really the most appropriate thing at the moment that we need to do is look at what the review will show and from there we can really determine the way forward."
