American Samoa census expected to boost local economy

American Samoa's Chief Statistician says the 2010 population census for the territory will create many job opportunities and give the local economy a much needed boost.

Meleisea Vaitoelau Filiga says there'll be a lot of one year long employment contracts on offer for census staff and many part time jobs will also be available.

Planning for the census is already underway at the headquarters of the US Census Bureau in Washington D.C.

In the past the Census office has used teachers to go out to homes and gather data from every household - a plan they intend sticking to for next year if the Department of Education allows it.

In addition to the main census conducted every ten years, American Samoa will also carry out another survey which assesses agricultural production and its contribution to the territory's economy.
