Yet another extension of police powers in Tonga

2:52 pm on 22 December 2008

The Tongan Government has extended, for the 26th month, the application of emergency powers in parts of the capital Nuku'alofa.

The regulations give the police wider powers within a designated zone within the city, which lost much of its CBD when rioters started fires during an anti government protest in November 2006.

The Prime Minister's Office says the latest rollover has been welcomed by some in Kolofo'ou, which incorporates the capital.

It quotes a letter from the Kolofo'ou town officer, Tevita Manu Fasi, who says the safety and security of residents is dependent on the continued extension of the emergency regulations.
