Tonga's Constitutional Commission about to begin its work

2:36 pm on 23 December 2008

Tonga's Information Minister, Afu'alo Matoto, says the Government will expect regular updates from the independent Constitutional and Electoral Commission, which begins its work next month.

The five person Commission is to determine the nature of democratic reforms that should be put in place in time for an early election in 2010.

Mr Matoto says the Commission, which has received financial assistance from the New Zealand aid agency, NZAID, will determine its own terms of reference and is due to complete its work by October next year.

"But it is supposed to produce a report half way through this particular period. And in fact the Legislative Assembly and Government will probably be looking for more regular reporting from the Commission."
