Samoa to have third commercial television channel in New Year

The Samoa government has issued another public broadcasting licence for a third commercial television channel to be opened in February next year with Cook Islands media owner, George Pitt, as a major shareholder.

Mr Pitt is also one of the shareholders in Samoa Quality Broadcasting Ltd, which earlier this year took over the operation of TV1 from the government.

A local veteran broadcaster and former president of the Pacific Islands News Association, or PINA, Apulu Lance Polu, is reportedly working with Mr Pitt in establishing the new commercial channel.

Called Star Television, it will operate, along with Fetu' FM radio station, from newly constructed studios.
