Japan Air Lines looks at increasing fares to Hawaii

11:17 am on 31 December 2008

Japan Air Lines is asking regulators to approve raising fares to Hawaii by 13 percent.

The Honolulu Advertiser reports the airline has asked the Ministry of Land Infrastructure, Transport & Tourism for permission to hike the Hawaii fares.

Other proposed increases include 10 percent for India and South Korea, and 7 percent for other Asian destinations.

The price rise, if approved, would be another blow to Hawaii's weak tourism industry.

Japan is the state's largest foreign market for visitors, and arrivals from that country have fallen 10 percent this year.

The fare hike is in addition to a current 416 US dollars fuel surcharge on round-trip flights from Japan to Hawaii.

Pacific magazine online reports the airline says it expects to lower its fuel surcharge in early 2009.
